Common methods for local maintenance of asphalt pavement
1) Repair of cracks in asphalt pavement. At present, there are very few cracks in the pavement of newly-built expressways, and there are more expressways built in the early days, mainly due to temperature cracks, reflective cracks in the semi-rigid base, and network cracks caused by insufficient base strength. Because expressways have high requirements on the asphalt surface, the treatment of cracks must be carried out according to high standards. For the transverse cracks that appear, if the crack width is less than 5mm, pour hot asphalt; if the crack width is more than 5mm, first use mechanical slotting, fill and tamping with fine-grained asphalt mixture. If there are many cracks, it is advisable to use an emulsified asphalt slurry seal; for network cracks caused by insufficient strength of the base layer, the asphalt surface should be milled or roughened, and then a layer of asphalt concrete seal layer should be added.

2) Maintenance of rutting on asphalt pavement. When rutting occurs on the asphalt pavement, we must first analyze the cause of the rut and which type of rut it belongs to. If it is a rut with excessive surface wear, remove the surface with a milling machine, and then re-pave the asphalt concrete. The appearance of road rutting in our country is mainly caused by the insufficient strength of the pavement base layer and the grading problem of asphalt mixture. If the strength of the base layer is insufficient, the surface layer should be milled, starting from making the pavement base layer, and then re-paving the surface layer; if the rutting is caused by the asphalt mixture, the surface layer part with unreasonable gradation should be milled out, and the anti-paving layer should be changed. Rutting asphalt mixture (such as SMA).
3) Maintenance of frost heave and pulp boiling. Diseases of frost heave and tumbling of the early built expressways often occur. The frost heave generally occurs in the cut section of the mountain road, and the water under the roadbed cannot be discharged. In such road sections, horizontal and vertical blind ditches should be set up under the roadbed, or water collection wells should be set up, and then the pavement should be built. If frosting occurs, the original pavement is completely excavated to the top of the roadbed, sand and gravel cushion is refilled, semi-rigid base (cement stabilized gravel) is rebuilt, and asphalt concrete surface layer is laid.
